Frequently asked questions

1. After the judgement delivery what proof have we that our child is concerned?

- We should remind that the international adoption is arranged by the national and international law. The association doing the mediation, makes available all the official documents, including the judgement, and a new birth report, where you are indicated as the parents, and such documents are final.

2. When we go to get the child from the home where he/she is placed, should we carry for him/her clothes and shoes?

- Yes, that is advisable. The child will of course wear clothes and shoes, but he/she will leave the home with the clothes and shoes that you are going to bring him/her. A few sets of clothes and shoes should be provided for, which the child is going to wear until his/her departure from Bulgaria.

3. Should the child’s passport be sealed at the airport?

- The passport that will be issued to the child will be Bulgarian. Do not forget upon arrival in the host state, to present his/her passport to the border police to put a seal on, certifying the date of entry in the foreign territory. That is a proof which you might need in settling the administrative formalities upon the child’s arrival in the state. It is reasonable to keep the airplane tickets – yours and that of the child.

4. Within how long time does the judgement take effect?

- Let us remind that the judgement takes effect as of the date of its delivery at the sitting with closed doors, provided that it will not be appealed against within the statutory period of seven days. So before it can take effect, first the period of time for the appeal should elapse.

5. How long does it take to get a new birth report of the child issued?

- The Association receives the new birth report within 2-3 weeks.

6. Should we make a donation?

- Donations are voluntary, they are a matter of personal evaluation and resources.

7. How much time passes from filing the documents in the court, to judgement rendering?

- The court renders the judgement usually within two weeks after the file reception. Such time depends though above all on the judge, on his/her working schedule, on the time the judge will need to examine the single documents making up the file, and possibly for requesting other documents, which will be added to the file, and the date on which the judge will make the decision determines the date of the court judgement.

8. How much time elapses from the first contact with the child to the judgement delivery?

- The first contact with the child (which should be carried out for at least 5 working days) is a part of the period of time during which the decision ripens in you whether to accept or not the child offered to you for adoption. During such period the file is submitted to the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Bulgaria, which forwards it to the Court, for fixing a date for the case to be tried. Thus  the period of time for rendering the judgement depends above all on the judge, on his/her working schedule, which takes into consideration the court vacations, on the number of the waiting cases, on the time needed to examine the documents making up the file, and possibly for requesting additional documents related to the case, to the family of descent or the adoptive parents, which should be added to the file. The time for pronouncing the judgement depends on all these factors, and usually that takes approximately two to four months.

9. How long should one wait for a child of 2 to 6 years of age?

- About three years, and though everything depends on the number of children entered in the register, and on the way in which the competent authority will come to terms with your expectations, described in the letter of motivation.

11. Is it possible for us to undertake actions for adoption directly in Bulgaria?

- That is absolutely forbidden (and is a violation of the law)!
